What to do when a girlfriend in distress tells me she's going to do a show as a Barbie-Girl, and she cannot find a box to put herself in? Then you just build one yourself!! I just had one tiny problem...how does a life-size Bimbo-box fit in a car? Lucky for me I'm an engineer and always have some strange ideas about building things. The same happened with this project. A lot of ideas and one really made it! Day 1 The biggest problem was the material to use as the see-trough plastic. I started with Acryl-plating, switched to Lexan then found out about Mylar and in the end used PVC. The same material wich is used for those nice windows in tents. When that was settled it was time to construct the rest of the box around it. The photo's have some comment, but it's still in dutch:) One of my crazy ideas was that I didn't want a square box, and that's it. It wouldn't work with the PVC either. So I've deceided to put in a nice bend in the corner to guide the PVC sheet. The box is made of MDF and if you want to bend it you can be sure it'll break. And that is where the trouble started:) Have a lookt at the photos how I and my dad fixed this problem!
The next day we tried to finish the bottom. Ofcourse that didn't work exactly as planned. I didn't want any ugly openings in the box at all. And then I couldn't reach the brakes for the wheels. (Yes you do need brakes, with a hot model doing a sexy dance inside such a box you don't want her rolling off the stage) That problem was solved with a simple hinge and a magnet. After mounting all the sideboards I found out it was exactly up-side-down. But that was no problem at all:) What'll be the next challenge???
This was a difficult session. How to fit all the standing poles in the box? It took me a while to settle this and the work from the previous day was almost all gone in a few minutes. But now it was better and improved with a minor adjustment!!!
On this day I stole a word famous logo and gave it an evil twist:) And as you can see it is a lot of work with a saw to cut it out of the MDF. And yes I do know it wasn't the entire logo and the upper half is missing. Just be patient! I also had the good length of the entire box now and was ready to fit the PVC sheet and stick the velcro-tape to it.
A lot of sawing went on this day:) And sewing as well. My lovely mother helped me out, becouse Me-Chiel behind a sewing machine is just asking for trouble! When the roof was placed on top, it wasn't exactly as rigid as I wanted it to. In the machines I build at work we use steel dowels to position and fasten parts, so why not on this box!? When that was settled I started attatching the weels to the base. Wich ofcourse didn't work as I planned it... On this day's last photo you can see how big it is in it's "transformed" status.
After a quick stop to a party-shop for the background & some attributes it was time to mount the see-trough front.
It's weekend again so time to do a lot of work. I started inventing the pattern for the background and I was being very precocious and tried sewing it toghether myself. And indeed...none good came of it. With some colour added to it, it started to look a whole lot better!
I'm all on my own at home:) But that's not a problem. Adding the special MDF primer took me the biggest part of the day. I wouldn't be me if I didn't time it so I could still enjoy the great weather and hit the road with my skeelers:) And in the evening a nice concert from some friends.
Some Sanding...nothing special. my first day off :)
Mounting the side panels didn't work as I wanted, and I took some effort in painting the logo. The paint was way to thick, and my patience was also a little bit gone. But in the end it looked rather nice...(lucky for me, or I would have had to start all over)
Yes...almost ready! Time for the blue paint. To bad I didn't think ahead. I had to do the difficult logo for the second time, but now in reverse....nice tip for the next time! Lucky for me it's late until 22:00 so I could finish everything before dark this day!
Yes...almost ready...again! Time for the pink paint. This went much better as the blue stuff since now I had a reference. And it is a lot of run to do to be honest...
Today I wanted to make a manual so the proud owner knows how to put it toghether herself. I think I have to do it over again. This was the first time I saw my entire creation in the full and just had to finish it by adding the Bimbo Logo.
So the Bimbo-Box is hereby finished!! All the ingredients I need for a big show are in, except the Bimbo Babe herself. Lucky for me I found one wich fitted exactly in this box. And don't I know that Ken-Guy from somewhere:)
Lexie Molotoff for putting up with me the entire weekend:) Norman Richter from SusanWayland.com for some of his excellent photo's And Ducksoup.de for their photos as well. |
